Numa perspectiva contrastiva, procuramos saber se também em relação ao discurso parlamentar é possível afirmar que falar de oralidade e de escrita é falar de dois sistemas com características próprias, que se pautam por diferentes regras, ou se, pelo contrário, este discurso revela um carácter tão formal, estereotipado e eloquente, que entre ambos não se identificarão diferenças significativas; ABSTRACT: This dissertation focuses on the linguistic analysis of both the speeches delivered by Members of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic during the parliamentary debates held on the referendum to decriminalise the voluntary termination of pregnancy, in two time periods: 1996-1998 and 2005-2007, and of their written versions published in the Official Gazette (Diário da Asssembleia da República). Due to the right to information on the life and the dynamics of the Portuguese Democracy, the Official Gazette (published in printed form and on-line) is expected to provide a fully comprehensive account of matters discussed and a verbatim report of parliamentary debates, in compliance with the Assembly’s values and aims. However, given the fact that between the enunciation and its written transcript each Member is allowed to review their speech twice and being aware that the official transcriptionists interpret that same speech adjusting it to the rules of writing, the analysis undertaken first aims at verifying if the written reports include any structural changes that may affect both the content and the meaning of what was actually said. Furthermore, and considering the two abovementioned chronologies that underpin the corpus under analysis, a two-level lexical and syntactic comparison was made: on the one hand, between the speeches delivered by members of each political party in 1996-1998 and in 2005-2007; on the other hand, between the speeches made by each party individually (EPG, LB, CPP, SP, SDP and SDC-PP) in those same periods of time, in order to assess any linguistic differences that might have occurred. The corpus is, therefore, constituted by two sub-corpora: one comprising the speeches delivered; another comprising their respective written versions. The contrastive analysis performed also serves the purpose of determining whether in relation to parliamentary discourse the two systems considered – oral and written – keep their own characteristics, or whether, on the contrary, the oral discourse is so formal, stereotyped and eloquent in nature that no significant differences between them will be identified.
