Referências à morte na música para piano solo nos séculos XIX e XX: marchas fúnebres & tombeaux

Abstract

Tomada por tema ou por motivo, a Morte inspirou uma quantidade elevada de obras de arte, e encontrou na música, talvez pela sua imaterialidade, a expressão mais ilustrativa das emoções, da dor suprema, das ideias de privação e de separação que esta provoca no ser humano. Nesta dissertação pretende-se explorar as obras escritas para piano, durante os séculos XIX e XX, alusivas ao tema da morte e mais concretamente sob a forma de marcha fúnebre e de tombeau, tendo como obras de referência as que irei apresentar no recital final de mestrado: a Sonata op. 26, nº 12, de Ludwig van Beethoven e o Tombeau de Couperin de Maurice Ravel. A estrutura do texto está dividida em duas partes, correspondendo a primeira a uma contextualização do tema da morte no campo da criação artística e sua manifestação musical em rituais fúnebres; e a segunda, a uma perspectiva histórica dos vários géneros musicais representativos do tema, aprofundando o estudo, numa abordagem analítica e de contextualização histórica, sobre os géneros específicos da marcha fúnebre e do tombeau. O objectivo principal desta dissertação é o de elaborar uma compilação de todas as obras escritas nestes géneros musicais, durante os séculos XIX e XX, para piano solo, de forma a contribuir para uma interpretação historicamente informada; ### Abstract: Death references in solo piano music of the 19th and 20th centuries: Funeral Marches & Tombeaux Taken by subject or motif, Death inspired a high amount of works of art, and found in music, perhaps by its immateriality, the most illustrative expression of the emotions, the supreme pain, the privation and separation ideas that it rouses in the human being. This dissertation intends to explore the piano works, composed during the 19th and 20th centuries, related to death theme, more concretely, written under the funeral march and tombeau genres, having by reference the works that will be presented in the master’s final recital: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata op. 26, nº 12 and Maurice Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin. The text structure is divided in two parts: the first corresponds to a contextualization of the death subject in the field of the artistic creation and its musical manifestation in mournful rituals; and the second part corresponds to an historical perspective of some representative musical genres of the subject, studying deeply, in an analytical and an historical context approach, the specific funeral march and tombeau genres. The leading aim of this assignment is to elaborate a compilation of all piano works written under the funeral march and tombeau genres, between 19th and 20th centuries, hoping to contribute to an historical informed performance.
