erosão do solo.

In the last few years, the Alentejo region has witness an increase of irrigated ar-
eas, especially with the use of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, and where center-
pivot have been one of the farmers first choices. However, the use of these systems in
soils with low infiltration rates, as it is the case of the Mediterranean soils, requires par-
ticular care in the management of the system to avoid runoff and soil erosion.
In this study, the overall objective is to make an update of the knowledge of irriga-
tion using center pivot systems, their evaluation and their adaptability to luvisol soils,
characterized by an infiltration process moderately fast on the horizon A and drastically
reduced in B due to the specific characteristics of the soil.
The study was focused on a center pivot, irrigating an area of near 70 ha of maize,
where there were evaluated twenty-one irrigation events. It were studied the operating
conditions of the irrigation system, the infiltration process of applied irrigation water, by
performing infiltration tests and by the monitoring of soil water content along the crop
season.
It were detected some problems due to a deficient design of the irrigation system,
and the increase of runoff and soil erosion along the irrigation events caused by a de-
crease in the soil infiltration capacity.
Keywords: Center-pivot, Mediterranean soils, irrigation uniformity and effi-
ciency, crop water requirements, infiltration. |
