Abstract: | A great number of João Pedro Oliveira’s works composed between 1982 and 2016 is either directly or indirectly inspired by biblical sources, themes and motives. From orchestral to solo pieces, from chamber music to electroacoustic and video works, the composer’s output is pervaded by such references, which inform various elements of his musical language. Thus, there is evidence of a strong and consistent link between the composer’s personal mysticism and his creative process. This paper will strive to make that link evident, through an overall analysis of Oliveira’s works related to the Bible and a detailed account of some of those works. |
