Abstract: Abstract The religious houses that were established in the vicinity of existing cities, have become centers of development in these places. In 1834 a new law extinguished religious orders in Portugal and the respective patrimonial structures were left empty with large indoor and outdoor spaces that were re-functionalized. A diachronic analysis of the appropriation by the population of the areas surrounding the S. Francisco’s Convent in Évora, and the Jesus´s Monastery in Setúbal will be carried out.
