Abstract: This article characterizes and interprets the Lisbon Municipal Archives, its facilities, collection and organizational structure. Special emphasis is given to the services it provides as well as its staff and clients. Although not an exhaustive description, this work highlights the function and importance of the Lisbon Municipal Archives and will describe the functioning and importance of these information services in the archivistic field, not only for local issues but on the national scale as well. On the other hand, some targets for improvement will be highlighted regarding information management in the city of Lisbon
