Impulsos perversos na ficção gótica de Donna Tartt

Abstract

Embora seja uma excelente escritora, autora de dois best-sellers, Donna Tartt é praticamente ignorada pela crítica literária. Assim, a nossa dissertação dedicou-se à análise de The Secret History e The Little Friend e, pontualmente, de alguns dos seus contos, abordando temáticas associadas ao Gótico. Foi nosso objectivo investigar a forma como a perversidade se manifesta nas suas personagens, relacionando-se com o medo, a culpa auto-destrutiva, o racismo e todo um conjunto de obsessões capazes de reforçar esse impulso perverso e originar um total ambiente de ambiguidade e fragmentação. Para que pudéssemos compreender estas perigosas relações, usámos um conjunto de referências filosóficas e literárias num confronto entre as narrativas de Tartt e as dos precursores do Gótico Inglês e Norte-Americano, bem como de alguns ícones do Gótico Sulista. Por fim, observámos como a perversidade, e outras temáticas que lhe são inerentes, estão presentes no cinema de Alfred Hitchcock e David Lynch, além de estabelecerem interessantes correspondências com outros exemplos de artes visuais com os quais a obra de Tartt tão profundamente se relaciona. – ABSTRACT: Though being an excellent writer, author of two best-sellers, Donna Tartt is almost ignored by literary criticism. Bearing this in mind, this dissertation has analyzed The Secret History and The Little Friend, and some of her short stories and nonfiction, studying Gothic themes. lt was our aim to study how perversity shows itself in Tartt's characters, and how it is linked to fear, auto-destructive guilty, racism and several obsessions which can reinforce the imp of the perverse, creating ambiguity and fragmentation. ln order to understand these dangerous relations, we have used several philosophical and literary references so that we could compare Tartt's novels to her English and North-American Gothic precursors, and with some literary icons of Southern Gothic. Finally, we have analyzed how perversity, and other inherent concepts are present in the cinema of Alfred Hitchcock and David Lynch, besides having interesting correspondences with other examples in visual arts to which the fiction of Tartt deeply relates.
