Novas perspetivas da literatura gótica norte-americana: o contributo de A. M. Homes

Abstract

Esta dissertação destina-se a ser um ponto de partida de uma complexa demanda, através da ficção Gótica Norte-Americana, para encontrar vários aspetos determinantes na obra The End of Alice, de forma a neles identificar algumas marcas góticas que permitam observar, nesta obra de A. M. Homes, uma corrente negra que igualmente perpassa por certas obras mais representativas e conotadas com o Gótico, mais especificamente com o Gótico Norte-Americano, enquanto modo literário. Esta busca levou-nos a refletir sobre questões essenciais próprias da génese da ficção gótica, ao mesmo tempo que a abordagem teórico-crítica nos fez descobrir e entender quais os novos caminhos do Gótico contemporâneo, a fim de refletir se poderemos considerar a autora como uma herdeira desta rica e vasta tradição. De forma a atingir os objetivos propostos, procedeu-se a um estudo crítico da obra em questão, sem esquecer fatores determinantes ligados à evolução do Gótico literário. A busca por respostas conclusivas levou-nos à necessidade de constituir uma sólida base de sustentação teórica capaz de questionar se é possível aproximar The End of Alice de uma certa visão gótica, que contribua para divulgar a obra e sua respetiva autora, prestando-se, assim, um contributo para o estudo do Gótico Norte-Americano, em particular do final do século XX; ### Abstract: New Perspectives of the North-American Gothic Literature: The Contribution of A. M. Homes This dissertation intends to be a starting point to a complex demand, through the North-American Gothic fiction, to find several determinant aspects in the work The End of Alice, in order to identify some Gothic marks that allow to observe, in this work of A. M. Homes, a dark current that equally permeates certain works that are more representative and connoted with the Gothic, specifically the North-American Gothic, as a literary mode. This search leads us to reflect on key issues of the genesis of the Gothic fiction, while the theoretical and critical approach allowed us to discover and understand which are the new paths of the contemporary Gothic so that we can reflect if we may consider the author as an heiress of this vast and rich tradition. In order to achieve the proposed goals, we proceeded to a critical study of the work in question without forgetting determinant factors connected to the evolution of literary Gothic. The search for conclusive answers led us to constitute a solid basis of theoretical framing that may be able to question if it is possible to bring The End of Alice closer to a certain Gothic vision that contributes to divulge the work and its respective author, thus providing a contribution to the study of North-American Gothic, particularly the late 20th century.
