Palácio dos Morgados da Mesquita: memórias da presença militar em Évora

Abstract

Este estudo propõe-se contribuir para o conhecimento da relevância de Évora no âmbito da organização territorial do Exército português para, com base nas conclusões sobre o tema, se formular uma proposta de valorização patrimonial relativa a algum do edificado histórico que foi usado pelos militares sediados na cidade. A hipótese interpretativa que está na base do nosso trabalho é a seguinte: a presença militar marcou a cidade de Évora ao longo do século XIX, no período afirmação do Liberalismo, e os militares passaram a ocupar alguns edifícios até então afetos, sobretudo, à Igreja. O Exército da Nação, que o regime político Liberal procurava criar, substituía, pelo menos parcialmente, a presença que o clero regular até então tinha na cidade. A proposta de valoração patrimonial, concretiza-se mediante a conceção de um itinerário subordinado ao tema Percurso pela Évora Militar Oitocentista e pretende ser uma proposta de maior diferenciação em termos de promoção turística do património histórico e cultural eborense, sobretudo o edificado. Propõe-se um novo olhar sobre a cidade, numa lógica de oferta temática, similar ao que, no campo dos percursos urbanos, já se faz noutras cidades portuguesas; ### Abstract The Palace of Morgados da Mesquita: memories of military presence in Évora This study purposes to contribute for the knowledge of the importance of Évora in the ambit of Portuguese Army’s territorial organization for, based on the conclusions about the theme, create a heritage valorisation suggestion related to some historical buildings that were used by the soldiers who were at town. The interpretative hypothesis, which is the base of our assignment, is: the military presence marked Évora city through the 19th century, in the time of Liberalism affirmation, and the soldiers occupied some buildings that belonged until then, mainly, to the Church. The Nation’s Army, those that the Liberal regime was seeking to create, replace, at least partially, the presence that the regular clergy had until then in the city. The heritage valorization suggestion, realizes by the conception of an itinerary subordinated to the theme Percurso pela Évora Militar Oitocentista and it is a suggestion with a major differentiation in terms of touristic promotion of the historic and cultural heritage of Évora, mainly the buildings. It seeks a new perspective of the city, in a thematic offer logic, similar to, on urban tours area, what it is done on other Portuguese cities.
