Abstract

O Forte Artilheiro de Vila Viçosa constitui um caso singular da arquitetura militar portuguesa pela sua condição híbrida, refletindo a transição entre sistemas medievais e modernos. Situado na raia alentejana, integra um território de forte densidade defensiva e assume relevância na compreensão da evolução urbana da vila, marcada pela proximidade da Casa de Bragança. Este trabalho propõe-se reunir, sistematizar e analisar a documentação iconográfica e cartográfica existente sobre o forte e Vila Viçosa, organizando-a de forma cronológica para permitir uma leitura integrada da evolução urbana e arquitetónica. O estudo apoia-se na recolha de fontes gráficas e bibliográficas, no redesenho de elementos arquitetónicos e urbanos e na comparação com casos análogos em Portugal e no Norte de África. Os resultados permitem identificar o papel do Forte Artilheiro como peça pioneira das fortificações de transição, contribuem ainda com documentação gráfica sistematizada, útil para futuras investigações e para a valorização patrimonial da Vila; The strong scorer of vila viçosa. Evolution of defensive structures - Abstract: The Forte Artilheiro of Vila Viçosa represents a singular case within Portuguese military architecture due to its hybrid character, reflecting the transition between medieval and modern systems of fortification. Located along the Alentejo frontier, it forms part of a territory of high defensive density and plays an important role in understanding the urban evolution of the town, shaped by the proximity of the House of Braganza. This study aims to compile, systematise and analyse the existing iconographic and cartographic documentation relating to the fort and to Vila Viçosa, organising it chronologically in order to enable an integrated reading of urban and architectural development. The research is based on the collection of graphic and bibliographic sources, the redrawing of architectural and urban elements, and comparison with analogous cases in Portugal and North Africa.
