Caso clínico de tétano em cão de raça indefinida no litoral alentejano

Abstract

O presente relatório foi elaborado no âmbito do estágio curricular do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina Veterinária da Universidade de Évora, com foco na área de clínica e cirurgia de animais de companhia. O relatório está dividido em duas partes. A primeira parte preocupa-se com a apresentação da casuística observada ao longo do estágio, dividida pelas diferentes áreas que compreendem a Medicina Veterinária. Já a segunda parte do relatório, centra-se no desenvolvimento de um caso de tétano na espécie canina, proveniente do litoral alentejano. Este caso permitiu aprofundar conhecimentos sobre a fisiopatologia, diagnóstico, tratamento e prognóstico de uma doença pouco frequente, mas com elevada relevância clínica. O tétano é uma doença neurológica ubiquitária, de distribuição mundial, que pode afetar tanto humanos como animais, causada por uma toxina tetânica (TeNT) produzida pela bactéria Clostridium tetani. A doença é essencialmente caracterizada pela sua paralisia espástica, resultante da ação da toxina no sistema nervoso; - Abstract: Case Report: Tetanus in a Mixed-Breed Dog in Alentejo This report was prepared within the scope of the curricular internship of the Integrated master’s in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Évora, with focus on companion animal medicine. The report is divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to the presentation of the caseload observed throughout the internship, organized by the different areas that comprise Veterinary Medicine. The second part of the report focuses on the development of a case of tetanus in a canine, from Alentejo. This case allowed for a deeper understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of a disease that, while uncommon, holds high clinical relevance. Tetanus is a ubiquitous neurological disease of worldwide distribution that can affect both humans and animals, caused by tetanus toxin (TeNT) produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani. The disease is characterized by its spastic paralysis, resulting from the action of the toxin on the nervous system.
