"Museu Rainha Dona Leonor: o Inventário de 1898 no esteio da coleção inicial e seus impactes na História da Arqueologia em Beja

Abstract

No final do século XIX, Beja desenvolveu-se com a inserção de linhas férreas que permitiram um contacto direto com as ideias culturais que germinavam na capital. A população de Beja via a instrução como sinónimo de prosperidade, levando a Arqueologia e a Museologia a darem importantes passos para o seu desenvolvimento nesta região. Neste contexto é inaugurado o Museu Arqueológico Municipal de Beja em 1892, tendo uma coleção inicial sustentada por exemplares do Museu Sesinando Cenaculano Pacense e por outros tantos oferecidos por populares ou figuras ilustres da sociedade pacense. Em 1898 Joaquim António de Vargas, conservador e bibliotecário, elaborou o Inventário de 1898 com intuito de catalogar esse acervo inicial. O presente estudo aspira contextualizar e descrever o Inventário de 1898, reintroduzir o seu autor no Estado da Arte e compreender os impactes que este documento teve no Museu Rainha Dona Leonor e na História da Arqueologia em Beja; Rainha Dona Leonor Museum: the 1898 Inventory at the heart of the early collection and its impact on the History of Archaeology in Beja - Abstract: At the end of the 19th century, Beja developed with the addition of railway lines, allowing direct contact with the cultural ideas that were emerging in the capital. The population of Beja saw education as a path to prosperity, leading to important developments in Archaeology and Museology in the region. In this context, the Municipal Archaeological Museum of Beja was inaugurated in 1892, with an initial collection supported by items from the Sesinando Cenaculano Pacense Museum and items donated by ordinary people or distinguished figures in the pacense society. In 1898, curator and librarian, Joaquim António de Vargas prepared the 1898 Inventory to catalog this initial collection. This study aims to contextualize and describe the 1898 Inventory, reintroduce its author in the State of the Art, and understand the impact this document had on the Rainha Dona Leonor Museum and the History of Archaeology in Beja
