Degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Évora, held at the Vetbeirão
Veterinary Clinic, focusing on small animal clinical practice and surgery. The first part
of this report describes the activities and caseload followed during the internship. The
second part consists of a literature review on "Canine Leishmaniasis" followed by the
description and discussion of two clinical cases observed during the internship.
Leishmaniasis is a zoonosis endemic in Portugal caused by Leishmania infantum and
transmitted by sandflies. The main host is the dog, in which a multisystemic disease with
varied symptoms and complex diagnosis may develop. The treatment aims to reduce
clinical signs and control the infection; however, it is not possible to achieve
parasitological cure. It is essential to adopt preventive and immunoprophylactic measures
to reduce the incidence of this disease.
