The role of idioms in English as a Lingua Franca contexts and in English language learning and use

Abstract

The main aim of the present dissertation, written as part of the master's programme in Languages and Linguistics, Language Sciences specialisation, is to address issues related to English as a lingua franca, as well as the roleof idiomsin ELF contexts. Thus, the focus will not be solely on Standard British English and American English, as the perspective presented in this study covers the English language in a more general and comprehensive way, encompassing different varieties of the language. Firstly, the concept of idiom will be addressed, in addition to relating it to the concepts of pragmatics, language and culture. In the second chapter, the aim will be to understand the differences between the concepts of Standard English, New Englishes and World Englishes as well as what makes English a lingua franca. The next chapter will look at how idioms are acquired and used by speakers of this language, establishing the difference between native and non-native speakers, and between the ELF and EFL perspectives. Following this, the focus will be on the use and effectiveness of idiomatic expressions in ELF contexts, with the next chapter looking at how creativity can play a major role in idiomaticity. The following chapter is dedicated to the methodology used to collect the data to be analysed and discussed in the next chapter.Lastly, the final chapter will include the conclusions and limitations of this study, as well as some proposals for future research; - Resumo: O papel das expressões idiomáticas em contextos de Inglês como Língua Franca e na aprendizagem e uso da língua inglesa O principal objetivo da presente dissertação, elaborada no âmbito do programa de mestrado em Línguas e Linguística, especialização em Ciências da Linguagem, é o de abordar questões relacionadas com o Inglês como Língua Franca, bem como o papel das expressões idiomáticas em contextos de ILF. Assim, o foco não se centrará apenas no inglês britânico padrão e no inglês americano, uma vez que a perspetiva apresentada neste estudo abrange a língua inglesa de uma forma mais geral, englobando diferentes variedades da língua. Primeiramente, será abordado o conceito de expressão idiomática, além de relacioná-lo com os conceitos de pragmática, língua e cultura. No segundo capítulo, o objetivo será o de compreender as diferenças entre os conceitos de Standard English, New Englishes e World Englishes, bem como o que faz do Inglês uma Língua Franca. O capítulo seguinte analisará a forma como as expressões idiomáticas são adquiridas e utilizadas pelos falantes desta língua, estabelecendo a diferença entre falantes nativos e não nativos, e entre as perspetivas ILF e ILE. Em seguida, o foco será o uso e a eficácia das expressões idiomáticas em contextos de ILF, com o próximo capítulo a analisar como a criatividade pode desempenhar um papel importante na idiomaticidade. O capítulo seguinte é dedicado à metodologia utilizada para recolher os dados que serão analisados e discutidos no capítulo seguinte. Por fim, o último capítulo inclui as conclusões e limitações deste estudo, bem como algumas propostas de investigação futura.
