enfrentados pelos bancos; - Explanatory Factors for the Decrease in the Number of Banks in the
Financial System of São Tomé and Príncipe
Abstract:
Being the financial system is a set of institutions, both financial and
governmental, managing a country's resources with the primary purpose of
channeling wealth from creditors to debtors, the banking sector is one of its
main pillars. The banking sector is a fundamental sector for the economic
growth of a country, as it finances the economy, promotes employment and
investment, supports families in terms of consumption (acquisition of vehicles
and construction of houses, etc.), and companies, by providing cash flows and
by financing investment projects. Since the independence of the country in 1975,
the banking sector of São Tomé and Príncipe has experienced significant
fluctuations. The increased intervention of banks in the economy, through
credit, also led to an increase in the portfolio of non-performing loans.
Consequently, commercial banks have faced enormous difficulties in dealing
with the situation of recovering non-performing loans, and naturally, some
banks have not resisted and have failed. In recent years, we have witnessed the
disappearance of several commercial banks from our system. Therefore, it is
necessary to create mechanisms that help banks prevent these situations from
happening again. Thus, in this dissertation, we sought to identify a way to assess
the risk of bank failure in São Tomé and Príncipe. The objective is to propose a
support mechanism that contributes to helping solve one of the biggest
problems faced by banks. |
