Non humilis mulier triumpho: as influências clássicas na figuração do feminino em Osmia de Teresa de Mello Breyner

Abstract

O objeto de investigação desta dissertação é a tragédia Osmia de Teresa de Mello Breyner, premiada pela Academia de Ciências de Lisboa em 1788, data da sua primeira edição. A análise visa, em particular, fazer um exercício comparativo entre a figuração do feminino na personagem Osmia e em três figuras da literatura clássica, a saber, Cleópatra, Dido e Lucrécia. Para tal, no primeiro capítulo, de teor introdutório, analisa-se brevemente o contexto epocal e cultural da produção de Osmia, faz-se um resumo do estado da arte, mencionando os estudos recentes sobre a autora e a peça e o contributo conferido ao seu conhecimento, bem como o levantamento de peças homónimas de modo a averiguar, de um ponto de vista global, as diferenças temáticas e estruturais de Osmia de Mello Breyner em relação a essas produções. No segundo capítulo faz-se um breve resumo da estrutura da peça, analisa-se a caracterização de Osmia e a sua relação com os valores e as sensibilidades neoclássicos, bem como a importância da sua identidade lusitana e o papel simbólico do uso dos trajes nacional e romano como motivo que corporiza as várias divisões expressas pela peça. No terceiro capítulo, analisam-se os elementos de composição que autorizam a comparação com as três figuras da literatura clássica, nomeadamente com os retratos e descrições elaborados por Plutarco, Virgílio e Tito Lívio. Na conclusão retomam-se estes aspetos para concluir sobre os elementos que atestam quer proximidade quer afastamento na figuração do feminino em Osmia em relação às suas congéneres clássicas, nomeadamente no que respeita aos topoi da liderança, sensibilidades e suicídio; - Abstract Non humilis mulier triumpho: the classical influences on the figuration of the feminine in Ósmia by Teresa de Mello Breyner The subject of this dissertation is Teresa de Mello Breyner's tragedy Osmia, which was honoured by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 1788, when it was first published. The analysis aims, in particular, to make a comparative exercise between the figuration of the feminine in the character Osmia and in three characters from classical literature, namely Cleopatra, Dido and Lucrécia. To this end, the first chapter, which has an introductory content, briefly analyses the epochal and cultural context of Osmia's production, summarises the state of the art, mentioning recent studies on the author and the play. The chapter also adresses the surveying homonymous plays in order to ascertain, from a global point of view, the thematic and structural differences between these productions and Osmia by Mello Breyner.In the second chapter, a brief summary of the play's structure is given; Osmia's character is also analysed throughout the play, highlighting its correlation with neoclassical values and sensibilities. In this chapter we also address the character Lusitanian identity as well as the symbolic role of national and Roman costumes as a motif that embodies the various divisions expressed by the play. The third chapter analyses the compositional elements that enable the comparison between Osmia and Cleopatra, Dido and Lucretia, namely through the portraits and descriptions drawn up by Plutarch, Virgil and Livy. In the conclusion, these aspects are revisited to conclude on the elements that attest to either proximity or distance in the figuration of the feminine in Osmia in relation to its classical counterparts, particularly with regard to the topoi of leadership, sensibilities and suicide.
