The weakness of a defeated race: alguns aspectos gótico-grotescos da figura feminina na ficção de Joyce Carol Oates

Abstract

O objectivo da presente dissertação consiste na análise de duas obras de Joyce Carol Oates, a partir de uma perspectiva centrada nos aspectos gótico-grotescos da cor- poralidade feminina das suas personagens centrais. Para tal, reflectiremos, previamente, acerca de algumas características essenciais do Grotesco. Referiremos a sua natural co- nexão com a Literatura Norte-Americana e a sua directa associação com o Gótico. Con- sideramos que estas duas categorias estético-literárias são as que mais se adequam às obras em estudo. Partindo da sua análise aprofundaremos os conceitos que nos permitirão abordar a visão gótico-grotesca da autora, fundamentada pelo recurso a certos teóricos, cujas implicações físicas e psicológicas envolvidas na abordagem ao tema do corpo no feminino são evidentes ao nível de tal categorização. Nesse sentido, embora não deixemos de reflectir sobre certos aspectos psicológicos que caracterizam, igualmente, as protago- nistas de The Gravedigger’s Daughter e Blonde, concentrar-nos-emos, sobretudo, nos tra- ços do Gótico-Grotesco inerentes à sua dimensão física enquanto realidade abjecta. Tanto em The Gravedigger’s Daughter, como em Blonde, são transversais as problemáticas sub- jacentes à figura feminina num universo sócio-cultural comandado pela visão e normas patriarcais, que reduzem a mulher a mero objecto, provocando-lhe efeitos de terror físico e psíquico, os quais dialogam directamente com a tradição do Gótico feminino americano; - The weakness of a defeated race: Some Gothic- Grotesque aspects of the female figure in Joyce Carol Oates fiction Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to analyze two works by Joyce Carol Oates from a perspective centered on the Gothic-Grotesque aspects of the female corporeality of her central characters. To do this, we will first reflect on some essential characteristics of the Grotesque. We will refer to its natural connection with North American Literature and its direct association with the Gothic. We believe that these two aesthetic-literary categories are the most appropriate for the works under study. Based on the analysis of these cate- gories, we will delve into the concepts that will allow us to approach the author's gothic- grotesque vision, based on the use of certain theorists, whose physical and psychological implications involved in approaching the theme of the female body are evident at the level of such categorization. In this sense, although we will not fail to reflect on certain psy- chological aspects that also characterize the protagonists of The Gravedigger's Daughter and Blonde, we will focus above all on the gothic-grotesque traits inherent in their phys- ical dimension as an abject reality. In both The Gravedigger's Daughter and Blonde, the problems underlying the female figure in a socio-cultural universe dominated by patriar- chal views and norms, which reduce women to mere objects, causing them physical and psychological terror, are transversal and in direct dialogue with the tradition of American female gothic.
