Manuel Gomes da Costa e a arquitectura moderna em Faro

Abstract

Resultado de um intenso esforço intelectual e de uma prodigiosa criatividade, o legado de Manuel Gomes da Costa escreve um dos capítulos mais importantes do Algarve moderno, onde a partir de meados da década de 1950 iniciou o desenvolvimento de um extenso repertório arquitectónico. Pertencente à primeira geração de arquitectos modernos formados no Porto, sob a égide do professor Carlos Ramos, Gomes da Costa trouxe para região, ferramentas e teorias que a alavancaram da inércia secular, que esteve apoiada desde sempre nos saberes tradicionais. É na Capital de Distrito, Faro, que o presente estudo incidirá esforços, almejando trazer ao conhecimento académico, a vida e a obra desta ilustre personalidade, que embora numerosa e evidente por toda a malha urbana, segue desconhecida e pouco estudada. É atento à sua pertinência que se enceta um estudo inédito que irá revelar aspectos não só da obra e do pensamento, como também da sua biografia. O trabalho desenvolve-se sob três linhas narrativas que se tecem numa só: a evolução do arquitecto, a evolução da sua arquitectura e a evolução da cidade. Uma vez conhecida a sua esfera intelectual e a totalidade do seu legado, partiremos para uma criteriosa selecção dos casos de estudo de um determinado período e tipologia, dos quais se espera depreender o léxico e as motivações subjacentes a cada um dos projectos seleccionados através da análise morfológica e funcional. Para tal, o desenvolvimento de todo o trabalho será feito com recurso às fontes primárias, onde serão privilegiados os documentos originais, levantamentos locais, entrevistas aos familiares e pessoas do círculo afectivo e profissional, em paralelo à bibliografia lançada até ao momento. Findado o enquadramento e a interpretação fenomenológica da sua arquitectura, obtêm-se um conjunto de parâmetros quantitativos e qualitativos da obra e da personalidade, resultando neste que será o maior estudo levado a cabo sobre um arquitecto da região mais a Sul de Portugal continental, responsável por um dos episódios mais prósperos do Algarve contemporâneo, mas também, um dos mais vilipendiados no tocante à conservação do legado arquitectónico; ABSTRACT: The result of an intense intellectual effort and a prodigious creativity, the legacy of Manuel Gomes da Costa writes one of the most important chapters of the modern Algarve, where from the mid-1950s began the development of an extensive architectural repertoire. Belonging to the first generation of modern architects trained in Porto, under the aegis of Professor Carlos Ramos, Gomes da Costa brought to the region tools and theories that leverage it from secular inertia, always supported by traditional knowledge. It is in the District Capital, Faro, that the present study will focus efforts, aiming to bring to the academic knowledge, the life and work of this illustrious personality, which although numerous and evident throughout the urban network, is still unknown and little studied. It is attentive to its pertinence that an unpublished study is uncovered that will reveal aspects not only of the work and of the thought, but also of its biography. The work is developed under three narrative lines that are woven into one: the evolution of the architect, the evolution of its architecture and the evolution of the city. Once their intellectual sphere and the totality of their legacy are known, we will proceed to a careful selection of the case studies of a certain period and typology, from which we are expected to understand the lexicon and the motivations underlying each of the projects selected through morphological and functional analysis. To do this, the development of all the work will be done using the primary sources, where the original documents, local surveys, interviews with family members and people from the affective and professional circle will be privileged, parallel to the bibliography released so far. Once the framework and the phenomenological interpretation of its architecture have been completed, we will have a set of quantitative and qualitative parameters of work and personality, resulting in what will be the largest study carried out on an architect from the southernmost region of continental Portugal, responsible for one of the most prosperous episodes in the contemporary Algarve, but also one of the most vilified in the conservation of the architectural legacy.
