Um particular olhar no políptico da vida da Virgem da Sé de Évora: estudo técnico e material do conjunto, com maior foco nas pinturas: casamento da Virgem; Adoração dos Reis Magos; Morte da Virgem

Abstract

Durante dois anos (2005/06) foi levado a cabo, pelo Instituto Português dos Museus e pelo Instituto Português de Conservação e Restauro, uma intervenção de conservação de treze tábuas da Vida da Virgem, provenientes do antigo Retábulo da Sé de Évora e que, actualmente, pertencem ao acervo do Museu de Évora. Estas pinturas, cronologicamente situadas no final do século XV, são de origem flamenga, produto de encomenda, bem ao gosto português, caracterizado pela monumentalidade e necessidade de ornamentar Catedrais, dedicadas ao culto da Virgem. Esta intervenção possibilitou estudos interdisciplinares, ainda a decorrerem, de uma vasta equipa, alargada a investigadores internacionais. A proximidade das pinturas e os diversos exames, do visível e do invisível, permitiram fazer comparações não só dentro do conjunto, como também com outras pinturas coevas; os estudos comparativos foram essenciais, tanto para o redimensionamento das pinturas, como para a sua aproximação à oficina de Hans Memling. //ABSTRACT: During two years (2005/06), conservation works were carried out by the Portuguese Institute of Museums and the Portuguese Institute of Conservation and Restoration on the thirteen boards of the Life of the Virgin, whose provenance comes from the old Retable of the Cathedral (Sé) of Évora and which currently belong to the collection of the Museum of Évora. These paintings, dedicated to the cult of the Virgin and dated towards the end of 15th century, are of flemish origin and were painted by commission to reflect the portuguese taste of the period. The retable is characterized by its monumental size and objective of decorating the interior of Cathedrals. The conservation works made possible several interdisciplinary studies, still ongoing of a vast team which includes international researchers. The close examination of the paintings side by side, of the visible and the unseen, allowed us to make comparisons amongst the boards and with other paintings of the same genre; the comparative studies have been essential to estimate the original dimensions of paintings as well as their possible attribution to the workshop of Hans Memling.
