/ABSTRACT - Te 18th and 19th centuries featured important events in the Portuguese architectural heritage. Human and natural conditions determined the poor state which many historic buildings have reached, giving way to several warning voices that were marked the beginning of a reflection around heritage conservation further materialized in the creation of institutions and the production of laws. The Directorate-General of National Buildings and Monuments is the result of this long, unfinished path. Its performance has been marked by a set of procedures implemented in order to recover the glorious past printed onto the stones of our monuments. The Monastery of Alcobaça was one of the stages of that performance, where demolitions and reconstructions ruled by purism of style craved for beauty and unity. |
