Abstract: | Objetivos
The principal objective of this study is to compare water aerobics and
yoga, showing the best benefits to functional fitness and health for the elderly
population.
Methods
Our sample is made of 30 people, 15 water aerobics practitioners (64.7 ±
5.4 years) and 15 yoga practitioners (62.9 ± 5.0 years). The recruitment of the
subjects, in this sample, was made for convenience through invitation to
participate in the study. It was decided that chosen individuals should practice
one of the activities for at least one year, at least twice a week, also those who
participate in water aerobics couldn´t participate in yoga and vice versa.
It has been valued the functional physical skill (test battery Fullerton), health
status (SF-36v2), and balance (various tasks made in strength platform).
Results
Through the performed tests it was verified the existence of better results
in the group of yoga practitioners comparatively with the group of water
aerobics practitioners in various measures of life quality, with regard to physical
function, corporal pain, general health and emotional health. In the performed
balance evaluation tests there was only significant differences in two of the
tests, “in position bipedal comfortable feet’s open eyes” and “in position bipedal
feet´s together and open eyes”. In the rest of the results there was no significant
differences between the studied groups.
In physical skill tests Yoga´s group had better results than the water
aerobics group, in a mobility test (sit, walk 2.44m and sit again) and in the test
(two minutes step). They characterizes also by the lower BMI.
Conclusions
In elder people, a regular yoga practice is associated with greater
benefits than water aerobics at the level of health status as well as some
variables of functional physical skill. For the balance it appears to exist no
substantial differences associated to the practice of both of the activities studied
in this work. |
