***Abstract - For a revision of the literature we verified: - The ageing of the population; - The increase in the number of pensioners with consequent rupturing of the systems; - The activity of nursing with reduced effectiveness predicted the delay in the retirement. This exploratory descriptive study was made by the application of a questionnaire to nurses of more than 50 years of age in H.E.S.E., and it concluded that: - Retirement means change, availability, deserved rest and free time to enjoy the family and for themselves. - The appropriate age for retirement is placed, in their opinion, between 55 and 57 years old, because of the nature of the profession, the type of working hours and because the attention to sick people and exposure to human suffering cause the nurses great weariness, nervous breakdown, brain fatigue and stress. - A delay in the age of retirement will cause personal, family and social instability; physical and intellectual abilities will be decrease and impatience and risks for themselves and for the patient will be increased. - It is not the intention of most nurses to work alter retirement. Those who do prefer to do activities like painting or studying. Only 14% plan a second career, volunteering career with a reduced time-table, but this all depends on the state of their health. |
