O homem e os montados no Alentejo. Perspectivas de uma dinâmica sustentável

Abstract

Analisa-se a acção do homem nos ecossistemas e a destruição da biodiversidade originada pelos atentados por ele provocados, fazendo-se uma breve descrição das relações que tem estabelecido com o meio, face ao uso dos solos, em cada período da sua história, ao nível das civilizações ocidentais e, em especial, das mediterrâneas. Apresentam-se os principais povoamentos florestais existentes em Portugal, entre os quais, os montados de sobro e azinho. Descrevem-se estas estruturas antrópicas, resultantes da degradação das florestas de quercíneas (autóctones da região), desde: a sua formação e distribuição, aos elementos que os constituem, passando pelas condições ecológicas favoráveis ao seu desenvolvimento, bem como as possíveis dinâmicas, ao nível da orlas, que estabelecem com sistemas limítrofes. Para além de serem indicadas as principais potencialidades no que toca à utilização destes sistemas - tradicionalmente extensivos: agro-silvo-pastoris - referem-se algumas características produtivas, as técnicas e práticas que lhes estão associadas, os principais fatores que contribuem para a sua degradação e a legislação que se lhes aplica. Considera-se ainda o Alentejo atual - enquanto região que concentra os povoamentos de sobro e azinho mais importantes no nosso país - nomeadamente no que se refere à demografia, cultura, estrutura da propriedade ou desertificação. Relativamente à ocupação que os montados sofreram, sobretudo a partir da segunda metade do século XX (que se traduziu na sua regressão ou degradação) e face à riqueza e à importância que mantém no seio das comunidades onde estão instalados, chama-se a atenção para a necessidade da sua recuperação. Atendendo no futuro destes sistemas, com vista à sua preservação e revitalização da região, sugerem-se formas alternativas de gestão, que passam pela conservação, pelo turismo ou ainda pela educação, numa perspectiva de compromisso com os usos tradicionais. /*** Abstract - We will take in consideration man's action affecting ecosystems and the destruction of biodiversity caused by different manmade aggressions, making a brief description of the relations established with the surrounding environment, considering the land use, throughout history, in western civilizations and, specially, mediterranean ones. It will be shown the main forestal communities in Portugal, namely cork oak and holmoak forests, so called montado. Theses structures, resulting from the degradation of ancient oak forests are described in several matters - structure, components, distribution -, considering also the ecological conditions to its development, as well as the possible relations to be established, peripherically, with border systems. Besides indicating the different ways in which these extensive agro-sylvo-pastoral systems can be used, we will talk about some productive features, the associated techniques and practices, the main factors that contribute to their degradation and the applicable legislation. Alentejo (being the area that presents the cork oak and holm-oak forests most important in our country) will also be considered in its demography, culture, proprieties and desertification. Regarding the evolution that montados have suffered, especially from the second half of the 20th century onwards (which led to its regression or degradation) and facing the wealth and importance they still keep within the local communities, we appeal to the need for their revival. As regards the future of these systems, heading to their preservation and sustainable development of the supporting areas, alternative ways of management are introduced, like conservation, tourism or education, in a compromising perspective with traditional practices.
