Portugal - 1940. A internacionalização dos cientistas do VIII Congresso do Mundo Português

Abstract

Analisa-se a internacionalização da comunidade científica nacional presente no VIII Congresso do Mundo Português (1940), permitindo construir uma base de informação cruzada sobre a sua formação escolar, intervenção pública e consagração intelectual. Esta investigação destaca a importância das competências científicas na nomeação para o congresso. Analisam-se os espaços geográficos e políticos com que os cientistas mantêm legalmente relações académicas e científicas nos três primeiros quartéis do século XX. Concluindo sobre a sua diversidade, tanto geográfica como política, mostra-se que estes intelectuais contam, na Ditadura Militar e no Estado Novo, com o enquadramento estatal dessa realidade, nomeadamente por intermédio da Junta de Educação Nacional/Instituto para a Alta Cultura; ### ABSTRACT: In this paper we analyse the international relations developed by members of the Portuguese scientific community attending the 8th Congress of the Portuguese World (1940), providing a fund of cross-referenced data describing their academic training, intervention in the public sphere and intellectual reputation. We highlight the significance of scientific competencies in the selection of those chosen to participate in the event. We analyse the geographical and political spaces with which these scientists developed a state-sanctioned academic and scientific relationship during the course of the first three quarters of the 20th century. We conclude that this is characterised by its diversity and we show how, during the period of the Military Dictatorship and the New State, it was conducted through state channels, namely the National Education Committee and the Institute for High Culture
