Abstract: Este trabalho tem por base um corpus de sete gramáticas / manuais de português como língua estrangeira, todas elas escritas em inglês por autores de nacionalidades diversas (portuguesa, brasileira, francesa, italiana e americana). Trata-se de, por ordem de publicação: A New Portuguese Grammar in four parts (London, 1768), de António Vieira. A Portuguese and English Grammar, compiled from those of Lobato, Durham, Sane and Vieyra, and simplified for the use of students (Baltimore, 1820), de Pierre Babad. A Comparative View of the Spanish and Portuguese Languages, or an easy method of learning the Portuguese tongue for those who are already acquainted with the Spanish (Cambridge, 1831), de Pietro Bachi. A New Grammar of the Portuguese and English Languages, in two parts; adapted to both nations, arranged on a philosophical system, containing a list of Verbs and Nouns spelt alike, but differently pronounced, and also an useful Appendix, Part I. – Portuguese (London, 1832), de Luís Francisco Midosi. The Portuguese Tresor; or the Art of translating easy English into Portuguese, at sight (London, 1840), de Louis Philippe R. Fenwick De Porquet. Portuguese Self-Taught (Thimm's system) with Phonetic Pronunciation (Philadelphia, 1904), de Euclides da Cunha. A Brief Grammar of the Portuguese Language with exercises and vocabularies (New York, 1910), de John Casper Branner.
