Abstract: In this Chapter, we map and discuss the Education for Sustainability in the Portuguese Early Childhood (ECEfS) context including recent developments and challenges that could guide us in the future. A brief contextualization of the ECE system in Portugal will be the basis for a specific analysis of the ECEfS cur riculum and pedagogy within the Portuguese Curricular Guidelines for Early Childhood Education and across teachers training programs. Research and peda gogical practices in ECEfS are also presented and analysed. Building on these anal yses, we discuss some critical issues in ECEfS curriculum and pedagogy as well as in teacher training programs, alongside new directions and possibilities for research and practice projects. Finally, we point out the challenges and potential for develop ment regarding ECEfS in Portugal, in dialogue with the international literature in the field.
