Loca sacra: para uma topografia dos lugares simbólicos no actual Alentejo em época romana

Abstract

O tema da religiosidade, trabalhado do ponto de vista da arqueologia, tem sido um tópico em ascensão em Portugal, desde início do século XX, período em que se registou uma grande produção sobre este tema. Pretendemos orientar a investigação para a temática suprarreferida através de um levantamento da epigrafia e estatuária de sítios associados às práticas e ritos do século I a.C. até ao século III d.C. A fim de obter uma melhor perceção do material no espaço ao longo do tempo, recorreu-se ao uso dos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG). Pretendemos com a utilização deste tipo de ferramentas revisitar o tema da religiosidade romana, estabelecendo paralelos no quadro do culto a certas divindades um pouco por todo o território do Império, bem como relacionar o modo de ocupação com os aspetos físicos do território, a fim de compreender possíveis tendências de implantação e escolha dos locais de culto. Através da recolha de dados e composição cartográfica, foi possível observar que os locais de culto se implantam maioritariamente em altura, em sítios visíveis e com boa visibilidade na área envolvente, nas imediações de linhas de água. Em contraste, certos espaços como São Miguel da Mota ou os núcleos urbanos consideramos tratar-se de áreas culturais, agregando em si diferentes culturas, povos e modos de vida. Neste contributo, expomos as problemáticas enfrentadas, apresentamos a cartografia composta – aspeto fundamental e basilar da presente dissertação – e os resultados alcançados acerca da religiosidade no nosso território e nas materialidades da época; Title: Locasacra: Towards a topography of symbolic places in the present-day Alentejo in Roman times. Abstract: The theme of religiosity, worked from the point of view of archaeology, has been a growing topic in Portugal since the beginning of the XX century when there was a great deal of production on this subject. We intend to focus our research on the aforementioned theme by mapping the epigraphy and statuary of sites associated with practices and rites from the 1st century BC to the 3rd century AD. In order to obtain a better perception of the material in space over time, we used Geographic Information Systems (GIS). By using this type of tool, we intend to revisit the theme of Roman religiosity, establishing parallels within the framework of the cult of certain deities throughout the territory of the Empire, as well as relating the method of occupation to the physical aspects of the territory, in order to understand possible trends in the implantation and choice of places of worship. Through data collection and cartographic composition, it was possible to observe that the places of worship are mostly located at a height, in visible places with good visibility in the surrounding area, in the vicinity of water lines. In contrast, certain areas such as São Miguel da Mota or the urban centerswe consider to be cultural areas, bringtogether different cultures, peoples and ways of life. In this contribution, we set out the problems we faced, present the composite cartography -a fundamental and cornerstone aspect of this dissertation -and the results we achieved about religiosity in our territory and in the materialities of the time.
