Succession and Biodiverse Agroforestry Systems as a measure to mitigate the impacts of the
climate emergency in Portugal
Biodiverse Succession Agroforestry Systems (SAFSB) are based on syntropic agriculture practices
developed by Ernst Gotsch. This type of system was widely developed in Brazil, especially in the state
of Bahia, and is the result of many empirical experiments and observation of the systems that support
life on the planet. From a perspective of human consumption needs, these are provided on an
extractive basis of the planet's resources, in which, considering demand, they have been consumed
and transformed in an unsustainable way and with great harm to ecosystems. In this work, we start
from the premise that the added value of this type of system is related to biodiversity and natural
succession of species as an approach to maximizing efficiency in the holistic management of
agroforestry production, seeking to provide a real response to worrying environmental issues. caused
by society, reestablishing autochthonous biodiversity and the ecological functions that are responsible
for them. With the aim of contributing to evaluating the problematic applicability of SAFSB at national
level, a narrative review of the bibliography was carried out, supported by scientific evidence that
supports the design of the system as well as the main practices that make it viable. Using data from
INE and PORDATA, an analysis of the country's economic situation and how its representatives
channel economic resources for environmental purposes was also carried out. For a realistic
perception in understanding the extent of openness of national Municipal Councils to carry out projects
with SAFSB, the degree of environmental awareness and public interest, surveys were carried out in
all Municipalities guided by the literature review, to collect primary information. In terms of legal nature,
the information collected was complemented with an analysis and interpretation of the facilities and
difficulties encountered by all those who intend to implement this system on national territory.
It is concluded that resources, both economic and environmental, are in pure decline in Portugal,
which adds difficulty in implementing production systems, although more robust from an environmental
conceptual perspective but without scientific proof, as the smaller margin of risky investment and the
expected longer period of time for ecological recovery. |
