Non, ou a vã glória de filmar. História e património cinematográfico no contexto colonial português (1897-1975)

Abstract

A presente tese explora a temática do cinema colonial português realizado entre 1897 e 1975, procurando clarificar o seu valor como bem cultural e fonte de informação historiográfica. Foram analisados, igualmente, os métodos utilizados na valorização deste tipo de património, assim como os desafios inerentes à sua conservação. Tendo como quadro de fundo a análise da bibliografia sobre a temática desenvolvida nesta tese, a metodologia do presente trabalho consistiu, por um lado, na recolha de testemunhos orais dos próprios cineastas, colaboradores mais próximos e alguns descendentes diretos. Por outro lado, foram analisados múltiplos depoimentos pessoais que ficaram documentados na imprensa da altura, bem como entrevistas de fundo. Além disso, efetuamos uma inventariação e contextualização dos filmes produzidos sobre as colónias portuguesas recorrendo a várias fontes e arquivos nacionais e internacionais. Constituímos, assim, uma amostra de filmes de forma a analisar os conteúdos e as forma de realização do cinema colonial português. A presente tese permite-nos, entre outras conclusões, verificar a existência de um maior volume de filmografia acerca das colónias portuguesas do que aquele que normalmente tem sido apresentado pela historiografia e concluir que uma parte considerável destes trabalhos não foi realizada ao serviço da propaganda do Estado Novo, mas que, pelo contrário, partiu de iniciativas privadas. Simultaneamente, foi possível constatar o seu valor como fonte para o estudo de outros aspetos (e.g., fauna, flora, arquitetura, economia) além das temáticas da censura e propaganda. Por último, esta tese apresenta, ainda, a análise histórica e a inventariação das produções cinematográficas realizadas em todas as colónias portuguesas – desde o período da monarquia até ao final do colonialismo português – e uma estratégia coerente e sustentável para a valorização da filmografia colonial portuguesa como um bem patrimonial; - Non, ou a Vã Glória de Filmar. History and cinematographic heritage in the Portuguese colonial context (1897-1975) ABSTRACT: This thesis seeks to clarify the value of the Portuguese colonial cinema as a cultural heritage and a source of historiographical information, by exploring the subject of Portuguese colonial cinema produced between 1897 and 1975. It also analyses the methods used to valorise this type of heritage as well as the challenges involved in its preservation. The methodology of this work consisted, on the one hand, in collecting oral testimonies from the filmmakers themselves, close collaborators and some direct descendants, based on the analysis of the bibliography on the subject developed in this thesis. On the other hand, several personal statements documented in the press of the time were analysed, as well as background interviews. We also carried out an inventory and contextualisation of the films produced about the Portuguese colonies, using various national and international sources and archives. In this way, we have created a sample of films to analyse the content and the forms of Portuguese colonial cinema. Among other things, this work allows us to verify the existence of a greater volume of filmography on the Portuguese colonies than that usually presented by historiography, and to conclude that a considerable part of this work was not produced to serve the propaganda of the New State, but, on the contrary, came from private initiatives. At the same time, its value as a source for the study of other aspects (e.g. fauna, flora, architecture, economy) beyond censorship and propaganda has been demonstrated. Finally, the thesis presents a historical analysis and inventory of film productions made in all Portuguese colonies, from the period of the monarchy to the end of Portuguese colonialism. It also presents a coherent and sustainable strategy for the valorisation of Portuguese colonial filmography as a cultural heritage.
