Abstract: | O mercado sempre fez parte da história da cidade.
comerciais influenciaram a organização, configuração e transformação do espaço urbano
analisar o espaço físico do mercado e de como se manifestou em termos arquitetónicos; The market spaces in Portuguese cities between the 16th and 18th centuries
Abstract:
The market has always been part of the history of the city. But what was the spatial and
architectural image of the places where commercial transactions took place? This thesis
presents a study on the exchange places in the city, determining how the commercial
activities influenced the organization, configuration and transformation of the urban
space of the portuguese cities, throughout the 16th to 18th centuries. Looking at the
remains in current cities and in the documentation allows us to ascertain how the square,
street or rossio became an organized and controlled “bazaar”. The chapters of this
investigation do not only address areas of the market, but also assess the effects of royal
and municipal legislation on space and architecture. This research focuses, essentially, on
the processes that gave shape and meaning to market places and on buildings with a
mercantile vocation. Thus, analysing the physical space of the market and how it
manifested itself in architectural terms is the main purpose of our investigation. |
