as coleções e mídias; ABSTRACT: “EARTH – A CHANGING PLANET: to understanding Tectonics of
Plates for search of new methodologies of scientific dissemination.”
Understanding the Tectonics of Plates is fundamental to understand the way our planet
work, due to its connection to crucial processes, such as the genesis of geological
resources, the interaction between the climatic cycles or the biological evolution itself.
Moreover the recognition of the scientific innovations on this subject, is to fill pre-existing
gaps regarding the dynamics of Earth and Life. These more recent scientific discussions of
tectonic activities concern the mantle plumes and the supercontinent cycle, which are
related in a direct and intense way to the great mass extinctions occurring on the planet.
Thus, the internal dynamics of the Earth and Evolution of Life have an obvious connection
and must be disseminated beyond the scientific community. Museums of natural history
and science centers are consolidated as essential places in scientific dissemination,
contributing significantly to the scientific literacy of the general public. These institutions
are a didactic and historical means of excellence that make possible the understanding of
the phenomena of the Earth and the Life involved in them. Based on this observation, the
main objective of this thesis was to present a new methodology for the dissemination of
scientific innovations in geosciences for exhibitions of museums and science centers that
promote an integrated perspective of the geological processes active in our planet with the
themes that involve the Evolution of Life. In a survey done in ten Iberian
Museums/Science Centers institutions it was verified that the scientific divulgation of this
subject is not effective and, when it is done, does not represent at all the most current
knowledge of the subject. In addition, an exhaustive bibliographical survey seems to
indicate that the subject, in particular, is not treated at the dissemination level. However, in
terms of understanding and describing the latest scientific trends in geosciences, the
bibliographic survey technique was of fundamental importance. A proposal of exposition is
made, presenting subjects that interconnect the knowledge of Plate Tectonics and Life
through the perspective of the cycle of supercontinents, superplumes and mass extinctions
of the Phanerozoic ("The Big Five"), with several types of exhibition resources, among
them dioramas, scientific illustrations, collections and media |
