Recordar - presente, passado. : a fotografia como documento histórico

Abstract

Toda fotografia constitui-se em um documento histórico que reúne uma enorme quantidade de informações, o que naturalmente desperta curiosidade e provoca a busca por respostas. Foi acreditando nisso que, sessenta anos depois, a presente tese pretende recriar o roteiro proposto por Tulio Espanca no seu Guia Évora de 1949. Propõe ainda imagens para serem utilizadas num novo guia, bem como um CD com imagens da cidade e fundo musical para ser visto antes ou depois de uma suposta visita à Évora. Na primeira parte da dissertação visei basicamente comparar as imagens do Guia Évora de 1949 com o material recente recolhido por mim, procurando mostrar as semelhanças, as alterações, e por vezes até o desaparecimento de algum elemento antes registado. Procurei seguir o roteiro proposto, registrando sem nenhuma outra intenção que não a documental. Afinal, o interesse era a fotografia como meio de informação e conhecimento. Sempre que foi possível procurou-se reproduzir exatamente as mesmas imagens do Guia. O estudo não pretende indicar as razões que justificam a leitura atual dos volumes e espaços, ou seja, o motivo do entaipamento de uma janela, da demolição do trecho de algum edifício ou de uma adição na volumetria de outro. O trabalho no sentido de uma investigação de cunho histórico levaria muitos anos para ser concluído, por isso segue a leitura de hoje (2009) com a imagem de sessenta anos atrás, e mais sua função e uso atuais, bem como a localização dos elementos abordados. A segunda parte da dissertação, que diz respeito à proposta de atualização e valorização do patrimônio através de imagens fotográficas, surgiu em função da minha percepção natural como arquiteto e fotógrafo, nas andanças diárias pelas ruas da cidade, e pela pesquisa realizada com pessoas, em imagens de arquivos, e em antigos e novos guias de Évora. Observei fundamentalmente que as imagens poderiam ser desdobradas em muitas outras perspectivas, apesar do desafio natural de uma boa estética, do fator do equipamento urbano e dos veículos estarem presentes por todo lado. A terceira e última parte refere­ se a imagens transpostas em um CD com fundo musical, que além de oferecer vários ângulos e perspectivas extras, permite que o interessado visite edifícios da cidade onde por qualquer motivo não pôde estar presente. O CD torna-se assim um equipamento de divulgação, com conteúdo trabalhado esteticamente, fácil de transportar e de ser reproduzido. – ABSTRACT: The photo in its entirety is a historical document abundant in information that naturally gives rise to curiosity and the need for answers. It is due to this that sixty years on, the present thesis intends to recreate a guidebook originated by Tulio Espanca '1949 Evora Guide'. It intends to use images in a new guidebook, including a CD with images of the city with background music, to be viewed before or after visiting Evora. ln the first part of the dissertation, I began basically by purchasing the images of the '1949 Évora guide', with recent material which I had already collected, trying to show similarities, changes and at times, even the loss of some elements that once were present. I started to follow the guide's direction, recording what was documented; after all, the entire objective was the photo as way of information and knowledge. Whenever possible i tried to reproduce exactly the same images as in the guide. The study is by no means trying to point out the reasons that justify the present readings of the period and their volumes, or should i say the motive for boarded-up windows, the demolition of time of a building or the addition of another. The work in a historical and investigative context, would take many years to conclude therefore, it follows the reading of today (2009) with imagery that date as far back as sixty years, with today's functionalities and habits, as well as location of the underlined elements. The second part of the dissertation that deals with factuality and evaluation of heritage, through photographic imagery, was brought about by my natural perception as an architect and photographer, by my daily walks through the city streets and, by 'people search' in archives of imagery, and in old and new guidebooks of Évora. Fundamentally I observed that the images could be unfolded into various other perspectives, although a natural and aesthetic challenge due to an urban and material factor continuously being present. The third and last point refers to images transferred onto CD set with background music, although offering various angles and extra perspectives, allows the viewer to visit city buildings where they otherwise would not be able to. The CD is its self a tool of aesthetic information easily transported and reproduced.
