- ABSTRACT: This dissertation studies the Trade - Off and Pecking Order theories, coupled with the financial policies of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), in order to know which of two theories best describes the financial performance of portuguese SMEs. We applied the Multiple Linear Regression methodology to test the empirical hypotheses assumed by each theory, in a sample of 114,333 Portuguese SMEs for a period of 4 years (2005-2008). The results suggest that both theoretical models help explain the capital structure of Portuguese SMEs, but with greater statistical significance for the Pecking Order theory. The effective tax rate, other sources of protection tax, the size, profitability, short-term debt and age are determinants of capital structure of SMEs. Growth opportunities and cash flows, despite showing values close to zero, are also significant factors. |
