A pontuação na Península Ibérica: doutrinas e prática em textos metalinguísticos portugueses e castelhanos do século XVII

Abstract

Com o objetivo de contribuir para um melhor conhecimento da pontuação como aspeto relevante da escrita das línguas portuguesa e castelhana, esta dissertação sistematiza as principais ideias sobre a teoria e a prática da pontuação na Península Ibérica no século XVII, partindo de um corpus (meta) ortográfico/gramatical. O primeiro capítulo tenta esclarecer algumas questões teóricas e históricas relativas à pontuação, matéria complexa e pouco consensual. Já no segundo capítulo passa-se ao estudo dos antecedentes das teorias pontuacionais de Seiscentos e das relações entre a pontuação e a imprensa da época. Partindo da análise do discurso meta ortográfico sobre a pontuação seiscentista em contexto ibérico, no terceiro capítulo inventariam-se as unidades pontuacionais e descreve-se o sistema pontuacional por elas configurado. O último capítulo consiste na análise sistemática das coincidências e das divergências entre a teoria e a prática dos autores, estas últimas imputadas aos impressores, que dispunham de um sistema pontuacional transnacional. ABSTRACT - Punctuation in Iberian Peninsula: Doctrines and Practice in Seventeenth Century’s Portuguese and Castilian Metalinguistic Texts This dissertation aims to contribute for a better knowledge of punctuation’s significance in the writing of Portuguese and Spanish languages. Therefore, it systematizes the main ideas related to theoretic and practical aspects of punctuation in Iberian Peninsula in the seventeenth century, starting from a (meta) orthographical/grammatical corpus. The first chapter clarifies theoretical and historical issues concerning punctuation, which is a rather complicated and controversial subject. The second chapter studies the background of the seventeenth century’s theories concerning punctuation and its relationship with the press at the time. By analyzing the meta orthographical speech about seventeenth century’s punctuation in the Iberian context, the third chapter lists the punctuation units and describes the punctuation system they frame. The last chapter makes a systematic analysis of the similarities and deviations between theory and practice in the authors, pointing the printers as responsible for the deviations, since they had a transnational punctuation system.
