atividades do SA (8 meses).
The generalization of physical activity programs for the elderly people is of
extreme importance to their health and life quality, therefore it is fundamental to
set control mechanisms for this programs.
Objective: Assess the “Senior Ativo (SA)” participants physical fitness before
and after an annual cycle of activities in order to set guidelines for the program
(SA).
Subjects: The initial sample consisted of 210 individuals, being reduced to 52
individuals whose ages range between 56 and 82 years, with a mean age of
69.94 years and a standard deviation of 6.14. The sample was divided
according to the number of activities practiced in SA: (1) One activity; (2) Two
activities; (3) Three or more activities.
Methodology: Individual fitness evaluation by applying the Fullerton battery
tests, at the beginning and end of the annual activities program SA (8 months).
In the second stage of the assessment, the battery test was completed with the
12 stair-climbing test, 12 stair-decending test and version 2 of the Portuguese
health status questionnaire SF-36.
Results: Aerobic capacity improvements of 12.4% (p <0.05), the 12 stairclimbing
test and the 12 stair-decending test correlated negatively with the chair
stand test and positively with the 8-foot up and go test. The individuals in the
different groups each maintained or improved their lower-limb strength levels,
body composition and aerobic capacity, although statistically not significant.
It was also observed that although there weren`t any significant statistic
differences, there is a relationship between higher number of activities practiced
and the best results in the perception of the state of health of the subjects.
Conclusions: The SA program proved to be very efficient in maintaining and
improving aerobic capacity, there were evidence of maintenance and gains in
lower-limb strength and body composition, but it is necessary to improve the
working methods of the technicians responsible for the lessons. |
