Abstract: The current study shows cytological differences between the anal glands of pre-spawning and spawning peacock blennies Salaria pavo. The cytological differences in the anal gland coincide with higher olfactory potency of their secretions in spawning males, suggesting that seasonal differentiation of cell clusters secreting neutral mucins is related to the production and release of the putative sex pheromone.
