/Abstract -
The present study is based on the paradigms of empirical studies based on
phenomenographic perspective. Our aim is to describe students' views about the
learning phenomenon in the following dimensions: general conception of learning, its
functions, contents, temporality, processes, needs and difficulties.
This research employed a phenomenographic methodology that involved
semistructured interviews which were analysed by means of qualitative and quantitative
procedures.
The total sample consisted of 48 students: 16 of the ninth grade, 16 of the
twelfth grade and 16 of the fourth university year of an educational course.
The main results are referred, on the one hand, to the mapping of the students
conceptions both in what concerns each of the dimensions of learning and to the
structure of those dimensions themselfes and, on the other hand to the identification of
similarities and differences between their conceptions in what concerns different
degrees of learning.
In each dimension we found always conceptions directly derived from the
learning topic in question ("what is" aspect) and conceptions related to other learning
aspects. This analyse seems to allow us the conclusion that the global structure of the
learning phenomenon is essentially reported to five interconnected aspects: what is it?,
how does is occur?, how about contents, functions and values.
Only the dimension "How do people learn" and " What makes learning difficult"
didn't show statistically significative associations between the expressed conceptions
and the school level. In all other dimensions we found similarities and differences
between the expressed conceptions and the school level.
The analyses of the dimensions "What is learning" and "What learning is for"
seems to point out that learning conceptions are associated to their functions.
In three dimensions (i.e., "What is learning"; "What is learning function" and
"What is learned") we found signals of an evolutive movement from instrumental
conceptions, that is, connected to acquisition and application (reported specially in the
ninth grade) towards learning transformative conceptions that is to say, search for
meaning and self transformation (mainly referred both by secondary students -12th
grade- and college students).
In the dimension "When does learning occur" we also verified that educational
progress tends to produce a progressive tendency to improve the conception that
learning occurs along live span and the factors that affect learning.
In what concerns the dimensions "How do we learn" and " What is necessary for
learning',' we can stress the conceptual similarities in the three referred school levels.
In what concerns the dimension "What makes learning difficult" we'd like to
stress the conceptual similarities in the three school levels students analysed. They have a
clear perception about what makes learning difficult and point out three factors: one
concerning the learner himself; another, which is contextual) and a third one that points
to educational system, mainly referred to teacher's praxis.
The global data analysis seems to allow us the conclusion that the sample
students have a learning perception in the general context of their life. |
