Abstract: Portugal applied to join the EEC in 1977 and, following completion of the conditionality procedures, its membership took effect on 1 January 1986 at the same time as that of Spain. The analysis of the adoption of the CAP in Portugal gives rise to some questions that we shall address. Was the CAP adopted in a passive, reactive, or proactive way in Portugal? What were the conditionalities of its performance in Portugal? What kinds of lessons can be drawn from the Portuguese experience for newcomers, if any? Was it a success or a failure? How do we compare Portugal’s performance with its peers?
