###### ; The recognition and exploration of the Cultural Mathematics: an ethnomathematical approach with 7th grade students
The integration of cultural aspects in the curricula is a legitimate mean to understand implicit mathematical processes in student‟s experiences. It is also a way to respond to cultural diversity, towards a meaningful learning of mathematics (eg Bishop, 2005; Gerdes, 2007; Moreira, 2008)
This research aims to understand how student‟s cultural experiences, explored from a mathematical point of view, in the environment of the classroom, are a way of turning visible their implicit mathematics. To do so three questions were posed, that focused on the themes: i) cultural mathematics ii) mathematical communication and iii) mathematical connections.
The research methodology is qualitative, interpretive in nature. Data was gathered using participant observation, interviews, documentary analysis and the design of a curricular project. The conceptualization of the project followed an ethnomathematical approach and it was implemented in a 7th grade class where the teacher played simultaneously the role of researcher.
The results suggest that students: i) appropriated cultural practices while establishing relationships with their prior knowledge ii) showed gradual willingness to establish mathematical connections and iii) improved their ability to communicate mathematically.
