Authors: Ilhéu, Maria; Valente, Mariana
Abstract: For several years we have dedicated our-
selves to find strategies in order to change
world perspectives by “noticing” so many
ways of life of more than humans and world-
ing with them. With this aim we have been
working with pupils, students, educators, re-
searchers, and others. It began by following
the “delicate empiricism” of J. W. Goethe.
Through this method we venture to live di-
rect, sensitive and affective experiences in
different outdoor places; we treasure the
time and the continuity of experiences and
assign their meaning, stimulating the use of
different languages in raising short stories.
Through these multiple stories we can no-
tice and attend the transformations of each
one in these processes. The voices of Mi-
chel Serres, Anna Tsing, Natasha Myers and
Carla Hustak, Vinciane Despret, Donna Ha-
raway, Isabelle Stengers, among many oth-
ers, have helped us to weave the narrative
that we bring here. In this narrative made
together with the short stories mentioned
before, perception and sensibility come to-
gether with other forms of knowledge; with
them we may develop an ethical and affec-
tive commitment. A new model of knowledge
is ongoing, as Tsing states; its fundamental
characteristic is multispecies love.
Our narrative includes fragments of mak-
ing-world projects; discoveries of “abun-
dance of reality” in the most unexpected
places, both in semi-natural and in urban

The case of the Angolan ‘Objects’ at the Portuguese sectionAlbuquerque, SaraSalgueiro, Ângelahttp://hdl.handle.net/10174/318622022-04-27T13:56:34Z2022-03-25T00:00:00ZTitle: Glimpses of the colonial collections at the 1862 London Exhibition: The case of the Angolan ‘Objects’ at the Portuguese section

Abstract: The 1862 London Exhibition ‘was a symbol of mid-Victorian aspiration’ with a clear image to the world of Britain’s ambition and its empire. These kind of exhibitions were opportunities for other empires, such as the Portuguese empire to assert and highlight the potential of its colonies. The case of the Portuguese representation during the 19th century in world exhibitions has been examined, however, the display of colonial products remains somehow less explored. This research examines the representation of Portugal and its colonies at the 1862 London Exhibition, in particular the case of the colonial objects of natural history collected what today is known as Angola. Several aspects of the exhibition were analysed, in particular: objects, spaces and actors involved in the preparation of the Portuguese section. Regarding the later, two main figures were crucial for the organisation of this representation: Friedrich Welwitsch (1806-1872) organised, contributed and suggested objects that should be collected from Angola and Júlio Máximo de Oliveira Pimentel (the viscount of Vila Maior, 1809-1884) the royal commissioner at the London Exhibition. In order to understand which objects were on display, Welwitsch’s publications: Explanatory Synopsis of Samples of Timber and Medicinal Drugs (1862) and The Preliminary Notes on various objects from Angola (1861) were crucial to this research. Although the Portuguese representation was severely criticised by the press, Welwitsch was awarded with four gold medals for the colonial objects presented.2022-03-25T00:00:00ZBecoming with... Abstract: This presentation aims to evaluate how children's cartography (CC) can be implemented as a research-intervention
methodology promoting children agency within early childhood education for sustainability. Research suggests children
can engage and offer solutions to complex issues about sustainability and their lives (Almeida&Costa,2021) promoting
changes in local communities (Ärlemalm-Hagsér&Davis, 2014) while researching the surrounds
(Almeida&Damásio,2020). We propose an approach to Sustainability based on a conceptual framework in which child
agency is valued within a children-adult-context relation (Oswell, 2016). CC is a research-intervention methodology with
children as researchers and present-acting agents (Almeida&Costa,2021) as in other methodologies assuming agency as
an ethical and political compromise with ongoing transformations (Davies, 2014). CC are included in critical qualitative
research paradigm (MacNaughton, 2005). We present two cartographic experiences in early childhood contexts
addressing the three movements of this methodology: i) preparation with the children of the cartographic process; ii)
displacement through the territory registering the experiences using audio-visual materials and a diary; iii) discussion of
the process. Data were analyzed by content and interpretative analysis of the children's discourses and products.
Informed consent was negotiated with the children involved and re-negotiated during the research process. Participants
were given the opportunity to withdraw of the study. CC through the three movements provide opportunities for
children to understand, act and participate in their local community with specific and mean-full proposals of change. The
main contribution is introducing the discussion about CC as a methodology that promotes a relational agency while
children build a comprehensive vision of Sustainability.2021-01-01T00:00:00Z
