Abstract: The period that succeeded the Ecumenical Council of Trent was characterized, in Portugal, by the accentuating the female religious vocations, what meant spirituality based on prayer and silence, asceticism and liberation of the soul. The female purity that the monasteries meant, in terms of religiosity, the vow of perpetual chastity and enclosure, which completed, supporting the vows of poverty and obedience. There are several approaches in several Treatises of the time in relation to this subject, intending to contextualize the issue and identify its impact both within Cistercian female domestic, as in their most regional and local level, linking it to the monastery of S. Bento Castris in Évora. |
