Abstract: This paper introduces a new methodology for the estimation of concentration of aerosol particles in a known flow field. The proposed particle spatial distribution is based upon a statistical approach which follows from the minimization of the virtual work done by weight, buoyancy and lift forces. This distribution is limited to particles small enough to not disturb the flow field significantly. The flow field is calculated by a commercial finite volume code. The methodology was applied to the description of particle concentration distribution over an open cavity. The effects of the Reynolds number and particle characteristics upon the spatial distribution were studied. The methodology proposed here can contribute to a better understanding of phenomena such as human exposure to aerosol particles.
