Abstract: Living systems are the most complex and diverse systems in the universe with their multiple forms covering more than 25 orders of magnitude in massa. What determines such variety in shape and structure? Is the growth process of living systems a consequence of chance or of need? In this chapter we review some of the issues related to shape and structure in living systems and we provide an answer to these questions.
