As Dialogações Melodramáticas do Natal - Construção de um modelo de análise na longa duração (século X ao XX).

Abstract

Este estudo propõe uma história cultural das expressões da Natividade cristã no Ocidente, com foco nas permanências e nas transformações das encenações do nascimento do Deus Menino na longa duração, entre os séculos X e XX. A pesquisa investiga o surgimento das representações natalinas na Europa Medieval, seu desenvolvimento no contexto do Portugal Moderno e suas ressignificações no Brasil contemporâneo, especialmente nos bailes pastoris do Nordeste. A partir da hipótese de que essas representações compartilham uma estrutura simbólica e cênica duradoura, construída sobre o mito do nascimento divino, a tese busca demonstrar a existência de padrões subjacentes repetidos por mais de mil anos que organizam essas manifestações religiosas, artísticas e festivas. A tese propõe a fabricação de um modelo de análise, interpretativo e explicativo denominado Dialogações Melodramáticas do Natal, capaz de captar as permanências e rupturas das encenações natalinas ao longo do tempo e entre diferentes contextos históricos. A metodologia articula diferentes durações da História – o tempo dos eventos, das conjunturas e das estruturas de longa duração –, e fundamenta-se nos aportes da história das mentalidades e da história cultural. O corpus de análise é composto por tropos, dramas litúrgicos, autos pastoris e cantigas, incluindo textos de Gil Vicente, José de Anchieta e de diversos bailes pastoris registrados por folcloristas brasileiros. A pesquisa também se ancora na ampla experiência acumulada ao longo de vinte anos de atuação da autora junto a comunidades tradicionais na Bahia, o que proporciona à investigação um olhar aprofundado sobre os processos de preservação, ressignificação e continuidade desta prática cultural. O estudo contribui para o conhecimento de elementos das estruturas simbólicas que sustentam a cultura ocidental e a religiosidade popular brasileira; The melodramatic dialogues of christmas – constructing a model of analysis in the longue durée (10th to 20th century) - Abstarct: This study proposes a cultural history of Christian Nativity expressions in the West, focusing on the continuities and transformations of representations of the birth of the Christ Child over the longue durée, from the tenth to the twentieth century. The research investigates the emergence of Nativity representations in Medieval Europe, their development within the context of Early Modern Portugal, and their re-significations in contemporary Brazil, particularly in the pastoril performances of Northeastern Brazil. Based on the hypothesis that these representations share a durable symbolic and performative structure, founded upon the myth of the Divine Birth, the thesis seeks to demonstrate the existence of underlying patterns repeated for more than a millennium that have organised these religious, artistic and festive manifestations. The thesis proposes the construction of an analytical, interpretative and explanatory model entitled Dialogações Melodramáticas do Natal (Melodramatic Dialogues of Christmas), designed to identify continuities and ruptures in Nativity representations across time and within different historical contexts. The methodology articulates different historical temporalities – the time of events, conjunctures and long-term structures – and is grounded in the contributions of the history of mentalities and cultural history. The corpus analysed comprises tropes, liturgical dramas, pastoral plays and songs, including texts by Gil Vicente and José de Anchieta, as well as numerous pastoril performances documented by Brazilian folklorists. The research is also informed by the author's extensive experience accumulated over twenty years of work with traditional communities in Bahia, providing an in-depth perspective on the processes of preservation, re-signification and continuity of this cultural practice. The study contributes to the understanding of elements of the symbolic structures that underpin Western culture and Brazilian popular religiosity.
