O Clarinete Baixo como instrumento solista: escrita, técnica instrumental e repertório de compositores portugueses ou residentes em Portugal

Abstract

O presente trabalho aborda o repertório para clarinete baixo enquanto instrumento solista, escrito por compositores portugueses ou residentes em Portugal, procurando aprofundar e alargar o conhecimento existente sobre o mesmo. Com esse intuito, realizou-se um levantamento das obras compostas em Portugal e a sua categorização, tendo em consideração a instrumentação e o destaque atribuído ao clarinete baixo por cada compositor. Concomitantemente, procedeu-se a uma pesquisa bibliográfica, baseada nos tratados de orquestração mais comummente utilizados, manuais e livros técnicos do instrumento, com vista a apreciar as recomendações neles contidas sobre a utilização do clarinete baixo. Com vista a uma análise musical detalhada, realizada na perspetiva do intérprete, foram selecionadas 30 obras para o corpus deste estudo. Esta análise, referente a características da escrita para clarinete baixo, permitiu caracterizar o repertório, a escrita nele empregue e as solicitações feitas ao intérprete. Foi possível concluir que existe alguma prudência na escrita das obras em apreço, no que respeita aos extremos de registo e às técnicas expandidas, notando-se um carácter mais melodioso e expressivo, com uma estética menos vanguardista. Verificou-se ainda que o repertório exige um bom domínio técnico do instrumento por parte do intérprete. Por outro lado, o estudo permitiu proporcionar ferramentas de trabalho, com vista a facilitar a abordagem interpretativa, do instrumento e do seu repertório, por parte dos clarinetistas. Logrou-se estimular a composição, através de encomendas/pedidos e estreias de novas obras, bem como a sua divulgação a nível nacional e internacional com apresentações nos vários eventos em que o autor participou. No âmbito deste trabalho foram realizados três recitais que contribuíram para atingir esses objetivos, bem como a gravação e disponibilização do CD Extended Duo, com a pianista Ana Telles. No período em que realizou este trabalho, o autor procedeu à estreia de 16 obras, tendo pedido/encomendado 14 delas; - Abstract: The Bass Clarinet as a solo instrument: writing, instrumental technique and repertoire by Portuguese composers or residents in Portugal This dissertation explores the repertoire for bass clarinet as a solo instrument, written in Portugal or by Portuguese composers aiming to deepen and broaden existing knowledge on the subject. To achieve this, a comprehensive search and categorization of the Portuguese repertoire was performed, taking into consideration the prominence of the instrument in each work. Additionally, the most prevalent orchestration treaties, as well as manuals and technical documents specific for bass clarinet, were studied in order to determine the best recommendations for the instrument. To enable a detailed musical analysis in the perspective of the performer, 30 works were selected for the corpus of this dissertation. This allowed for the characterization of the repertoire, its writing and what is required from the performer in each piece. It was possible to conclude that extended techniques and the extreme registers of the bass clarinet were used with caution in these works. The pieces presented an expressive character, and less of an avant-garde aesthetic, while demanding virtuosity and technical mastery from the performer. On the other hand, this study intended to provide effective tools in order to simplify the interpretive and technical approach of the clarinetist to the repertoire and to the instrument itself. One of the most important goals of this work was to encourage the expansion of the repertoire for bass clarinet, by commissioning and requesting the composition of new pieces, performing them, and promoting their dissemination on a national and international level. To complement this goal, three recitals were organized within the scope of this dissertation as well as the recording and release of the CD Extended Duo with the pianist Ana Telles. Over the course of this dissertation the author premiered 16 pieces, 14 of them by commission/request
