Title: | Zenobia: The ‘Exceptional Other’ in the Historia Augusta |
Authors: | Teixeira, Cláudia |
Editors: | Brandão, José Luís Teixeira, Cláudia Rodrigues, Ália |
Issue Date: | 2024 |
Citation: | Teixeira, C. (2024), Zenobia: The ‘Exceptional Other’ in the Historia Augusta, in Confronting Identities in the Roman Empire. Assumptions about the Other in Literary Evidence, Bloomsbury, 323-344. |
Abstract: | The text argues that the encomiastic construction of Zenobia’s portrait in the Historia Augusta does
not reflect a laudatory conceptualization of the ‘other’. Conditioned by the
programmatic intention to demean Gallienus, the author of the Historia Augusta instrumentalizes Zenobia’s biography and manipulates the construction of the
fi gure by resorting to exceptionality, hybridity, and dualization |
