Abstract: | A summary of the Portuguese conodont research is presented herein. A total of 18 publications were found to have descriptions or references to Portuguese conodonts, starting with the work of Boogaard (1963). The discoveries were made in calcareous units from the Central Iberian Zone (Buçaco Syncline, Moncorvo Syncline), Ossa-Morena Zone (Cabrela Basin, Odivelas Limestone, Ferrarias Anticline, Ficalho-Moura Anticline) and South Portuguese Terrane (Phyllite-Quartzite Group), ranging from the Late Ordovician to the early Carboniferous. A total of 189 taxa were identified, belonging to 44 different genera, although only 126 are based on P or coniform elements. The most common genera are Polygnathus, Palmatolepis, Spathognathodus, and Icriodus. The systematic revision of this material is yet to be done. |
