The Practice of Supervised Teaching in Initial Mathematics Teacher Training - A
Case Study with ISCED-Huila / Angola Students
This research studies the role of supervised teaching practice perceived by the students of the
Mathematics Teaching Course delivered by the Huíla Higher Institute of Educational Sciences
(ISCED), in Angola, and its contribution to the development of professional knowledge of the
future teachers.
The theoretical framework included three main domains: The professional knowledge of the
mathematics teacher, its nature and content; the initial training of mathematics teachers and,
finally, supervised teaching practices in teacher education.
The research adopted the design of an exploratory case study, with a mixed approach, being
the data collection resource a questionnaire, which included some open questions, elaborated
and validated by experts. The treatment of qualitative data was based on content analysis
oriented by detailed categories derived from the specialized literature. Quantitative data were
processed using statistical techniques.
The study concludes that the supervised teaching practice enabled students to experience in
contexts what they learned from theory and constituted the basis for the development of
professional knowledge. Reflection on action helped students to start building their identity as
teacher.
However, the case shows that the supervised teaching practice was clearly perceived as
insufficient. There was no uniformity of activities among the students regarding the number of
classes observed, classes taught and reflection meetings about the practice. The dominant
supervisory style was the directive. The students revealed that they had difficulties in the
domain of didactic knowledge, mainly regarding the knowledge of the specific content for the
teaching of mathematics, knowledge of the students’ curriculum and ways of learning and
knowledge of the use and application of technology in the classroom. This suggests that the
way supervised teaching practice develops needs to be reformulated so that it can fulfill its
fundamental role as a privileged space for the construction of professional knowledge. |
