Abstract: The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of diabetes and impaired fasting glucose (IFG) among patients of a certified private Laboratory of Clinical Analyses of Évora (Portugal) and the characterization of the standard biochemistry parameters associated to the diagnostic or the evaluation of diabetes mellitus. We selected a sample of 7440 adults (age ≥ 20 years) tested for fasting blood glucose and analysed their metabolic parameters. The ADA – 2007 diagnostic criteria were used. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus was 10.2% and IFG, 16.8%. Both clinical situations were higher in men than in women (p<0.05) with prevalence rates increasing with age between 30 and 59 years of age (p<0.05) in IFG patients and between 30 and 69 years of age in diabetics (p<0.05). People with IFG and diabetes presented higher values of HbA1c, creatinine, total cholesterol, LDL - cholesterol and triglycerides, and lower values of HDL - cholesterol (p<0.001) than the healthy population. No significant differences were observed for microalbuminuria.
