Summary:
This work is the result of an investigation on the concept of ―contact barrier‖, by the English psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion, through a methodological and conceptual comparison between philosophy and psychoanalysis. The resulting thesis is as follows: even though the author argues that the concept of ―contact barrier‖ may have a singular clinical use, still underdeveloped, the concept of ―contact barrier‖ is of great importance to philosophy, concerning the conception of consciousness, the limits of knowledge, and the role of emotions in thought processes. The emotions, for Wilfred Bion, are the fundamental elements of all mental life, and the ―contact barrier‖, being constituted by the product of the emotional experiences, internally transformed, it is the structure responsible for the distinction between the conscious and the unconscious, and for its inception.
This thesis also points to possible future investigation paths: the development of an investigative line, both on epistemology and hermeneutics, that integrates this singular conception of conscience and the way of attribution of meaning in language and thought, involved in the concept of ―contact barrier‖. |
